Sound Mind vs. Fear

31 Mar

This verse has grown into one of my favorites over the last few years:

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind”  2 Tim. 1:7 NKJV.

Having quoted it, prayed it aloud and shared it in written form over the last few years, I couldn’t miss the use of  some familiar words in Luke chapter 8.

Jesus has just cast out the legion of demons from a posessed man. For a long time, this man was known to be possessed and lived naked, outside of town among the tombs. (I think we can interpret, everyone knew him and knew about him.)  Jesus casts the demons from this man, into a herd of pigs who then go jumping to their death into a lake. The towns people hear what’s happened, and come to check it out.

“Then they went out to see what was done; and came to Jesus, and found the man, out of whom the devils were departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind; and they were afraid”  Luke 8:35 NKJV.

The passage continues to say the people who witnessed the incident told how it all happened, resulting in the people of the area asking Jesus to leave them, because “they were taken with great fear” Luke 8:37 NKJV.

Jesus reversed the situation. The demon-possessed man was healed, given a sound mind. That’s what Jesus gives to us through the Holy Spirit.  The townspeople who knew this man to be crazed, themselves become overcome with fear and anxiety. They don’t desire to know Jesus, but to have him depart. The spirit of fear is not given by God.

Pray, memorize, focus on the truth of 2 Timothy 1:7. Any time we experience fear, we should hold it out to the Lord Jesus to replace it with power, love and a sound mind.
