Profitable – Deposit Faith in Scripture

9 Mar

Wealth is worthless in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death.   Proverbs 11:4  NIV

Riches provide no security in any day of wrath and judgment, but righteousness (uprightness and right standing with God) delivers from death.  Proverbs 11:4 Amplified Version

Riches do not profit in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death.  Proverbs 11:4 ESV

In all these translations, righteousness is used. It’s also in the King James Version. Any time I read about righteousness, I remind myself what it is. It’s right standing, reconciliation with God. More importantly, how is it obtained? Only through faith, belief. Faith in Jesus Christ and the sacrifice He gave.

Many places throughout the Bible we’re told righteousness come via faith or belief. Look at Gen 15:6.  “Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness.  NIV”

Even before Christ came as our ultimate sacrifice for righteousness, God established belief, faith as the way to righteousness. The same original word is used in both Gen 15:6 and Prov 11:4  (if you’re a word nerd like me, the transliteration is “ts@daqah” and the Strong’s Number is “6666”).

Also in Hebrews Ch 11, known as the “faith chapter”, we are told faith brought righteousness. Isn’t God’s word incredibly woven together?

So Proverbs is warning us that wealth is a false source of security. The ESV version warns it is not profitable in the day of wrath.  But, again being so complete, God’s word tells us what is profitable. Look up 2 Timothy 3:16 in KJV, Amplified or NIV and you’ll see the word profitable. What’s profitable?

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
